CRAB mourns the Death of Samson H Chowdhury
Mr. Samson H Chowdhury, Sponsor Director of Credit Rating Agency of Bangladesh Ltd, passed away on 05 January 2012. The Board of Directors, Rating Committee Members, Advisors and Employees of CRAB express heartfelt condolence at the sad demise of this leading entrepreneur of the country.
Mr. Samson was born on Feb 25, 1926 at Salgaria, Pabna. After completing his education in India, he returned to the then East Pakistan and settled at Ataikula village where his father was a medical officer in an outdoor dispensary.In 1952, he started his business career with a small pharmacy in Pabna. Later, with three friends he set up Square Pharmaceuticals Limited in 1958. With his innovative ideas, tireless efforts and dedication, Samson Chowdhury led Square from the front to make it the leading manufacturer of quality medicines, toiletries, health products, textiles, agro vet products. He also diversified investment in information technology sector.Now, Square is a publicly listed diversified group of companies employing more than 28,000 people. The Group’s yearly turnover is $616 million, according to its website.
He is a former president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industries, and founding vice president of
Bangladesh Association of Publicly Listed Companies. Mr. Samson H Chowdhury was associated with several renowned national and international organizations, including Credit Rating Agency of Bangladesh Ltd.
He was chairman of the Bangladesh chapter of Transparency International from 2004 to 2007 and of Shahbazpur Tea Estate and Mutual Trust Bank.
